The Mindanao and its suburbs were facing real medical problems due to the lack of doctors in the rural area. There were no specialists in urban centres also and thus, in 1976, The Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF) was established.
The Medical School was the first college which was set up in the Mindanao under the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF). The Davao Medical College is dedicated to providing the training and education to the medical practitioners of the highest quality, which will lead to the delivery of efficient medical care for the rural as well as urban communities. The foundation is a consortium of members that are from Ateneo de Davao University, San Pedro Hospital and San Pedro College, Brokenshire Memorial Hospital, and of Peoplesa Foundation.
Since its inception in 1976, the Davao Medical School Foundation has set a new standard for excellence in philanthropy. The foundation is guided by its mission to address the basic necessities of life for a modern and developing Philippines through the promotion of education, health and culture. The foundation’s achievements include the creation of a world-class hospital and elite academic institutions of all levels.
The Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF) is registered with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) as a non-stock and as an NGO. It is also passed or approved by the CHED (Commission of Higher Education).
The DMSF not only operates the college of medicine, but it is also operating the College of Dentistry, IPHC (Institute of Primary Health Care) along with CERDH ( Center for Education, Research and Development in Health).
The School of the foundation is lying in the area of approx. 2.5 hectares in the heart of Davao City, that have a very stable climate whether it is in terms of politics or the weather. There are large numbers of schools and colleges having affiliations from the 5 universities within the limits of the cities. The affiliation of the students is from Davao Medical College. There are clinical rotations third and fourth years in the affiliated hospitals such as San Pedro Hospital, Davao Doctors Hospital, and Brokenshire Memorial hospital, etc.
There are about 125 Faculty members that are active and experts from a wide range of medical specialties along with the total number of students around 1100 in all the four years. There are around 1200students from foreign studying at Davao Medical College every year.
Medicine needs the next generation of physicians to be people who both excel and lead in the clinical setting as innovators of new processes and technologies designed to support and enhance clinical care. The curriculum of Davao Medical School is a model for institutions across the country for its emphasis on life-long learning and extensive exposure to real-world patient care experience throughout all four years of medical school.
